Owen was 2.5 weeks old and it was Brandon's 32 birthday, so we decided to celebrate and take Owen camping. We booked a site at San Mateo State Park, that's so close to home we can almost see our neighborhood. When we checked in that afternoon, Larry Dowell was working in the kiosk and we suprised him. He said "what are you guys doing here?" I said we were taking Owen camping. "You're crazy" he replied with a smile. I told him that we would drive the mile home if Owen had a hard time at night.
We arrived in the late afternoon and had dinner. We took Owen and Reef for a nighttime hike on the trails and saw bats. Then Brandon made a campfire and we enjoyed the warmth with dessert. When it was time for bed, we put Owen in a portable bassinet on our bed, and put Reef to bed on the bottom bunk. We thought Reef would be sad at getting demoted, but when Owen woke up twice during the night to feed, I think Reef was happy for the quiet bottom bunk. Owen slept fine, waking up 2 twice to feed and a diaper change. He was a real trooper.
In the morning, Grandma and Grandpa Mehlberg walked from their house to see us and wish Brandon a happy birthday. We had coffee with eggs and corned beef hash for breakfast, true camping food to finish the trip. Later that afternoon, Grandma Annette took us to Lowes and we got a new BBQ grill from both Grandparents for Brandon's birthday. Grandma Annette, Aunt Brooke, and Brooke's boyfriend Kyle came over for BBQ dinner on the new grill.
