What could be more fun for Brandon than an event that combined both surfing and motos? Brandon was invited to participate in the 19th Annual SurferCross event this year with Blake, and they had so much fun.
There were two classes- professional and industry. In the professional class, one professional surfer is randomly paired with a professional motorcycle racer. Blake was paired with Cooper Abbott, professional racer and son of the famous Destry Abbott. In the industry class, all of the participant's names are put in a hat and drawn at random to decide the two man teams. Brandon was paired with a former professional jet ski rider named Tommy.
The event was scheduled over 2 days. The first day was a motocross race at Milestone MX Park in Riverside. Brandon said that many of the participants in the industry class worked in the motocross industry or previously raced, and not many were surfers. That made the racing really, really competitive. Neither Brandon nor his partner were fast compared to the moto industry guys, but they kept it safe and had a lot of fun. They ended up in 24th out of 27th after the day of racing two motos in the Riverside heat. Blake and Cooper ended up in the middle of the pack in the professional division.
Day 2 was a surfing contest at Trail 6, San Onofre. Brandon knew that his team would have the upper hand in the surfing contest. The contest was set up in 3 team heats of 6 surfers. The industry division surfed just one heat, while the profession division surfed two. The top 3 teams after the preliminary heats would surf the final. For the industry division, that meant that they had just 15 minutes to score good waves in weak surf at Trail 6, and had to end up in the top 3 out of 27 teams to make the final.
As Brandon had hoped, many of the participants in the industry class were guys that worked in the motorcycle industry and were not surfers. Many of them did not have wetsuits or surfboards, and some had a hard time standing up on foam boards. Brandon and Tommy crushed the first round and came in 2nd overall in the final. They missed first place by 1/10th of a point. Brandon came home with a trophy for the surfing class! That moved them up to 10th place out of 27 overall. Blake and Cooper did well, but not well enough to make the final. They ended the weekend in the middle of the professional class, 13th out of 21, and had plenty of fun.
