Kennedy Meadows Part 1

August 25-27, 2017

Kennedy Meadows is a beautiful area above Ridgecrest, which marks the unofficial start of the eastern Sierras. It's popular with hikers for its easy access to the PCT and Mt. Whitney. We hadn't been there in over 4 years, since Reef dog was just a little puppy.

We met Blake and Bud at Troy Meadow, just past Kennedy, for a weekend of camping and dirt bike riding. Brandon was healing from a cold and decided not to ride. I was sad for him, but also excited to have a camping weekend as a family. This was also our first trip with Buds family: his wife Mindy and daughter Sienna. We had fun camping with another family going through similar struggles and triumphs of toddlerhood! Bud and Blake had fun on their motos while we had fun exploring the creek. Till next time!

Neighborhood Fire

August 24, 2017

This is not a fun post to write, but it's a memory we will have forever.

At 3am, we woke to what sounded like a bomb exploding in our back yard. We jumped out of bed and ran into the living room to see what had happened. Then we heard another blast. It's hard to describe how loud the explosions were.  At first, we thought the tree in the front yard had fallen on the house, but after looking out the front door, we saw the tree standing. Then we thought Camp Pendleton might have mistakenly dropped a bomb on our neighborhood, or worse yet, North Korea had started a war in our backyard. Seeing nothing out front, we ran into the backyard.

Brandon got outside first and all I heard was "OOHHHH NOOO". What , What? As I jumped off the step into the yard, I saw flames rising into the sky, with embers falling everywhere, including in our backyard. It appeared that our neighbor's house behind us was on fire, and risking our house from catching fire too.  Brandon began running around, pulling flammable items away from the house to make sure the embers didn't land and bring the fire onto our house. He pulled the umbrella, dog beds, and other stuff we had inside or as far from the house as he could.

I immediately ran inside to get Owen. I opened the door and Owen was standing in his crib, reaching out to me and crying "mommy!" Because the fire was behind the house and Owen's windows face that direction, his entire room was filled with an orange glowing light. It looked like Owen was in a burning room. I will never, ever, forget that moment. So scary!

I grabbed Owen and we ran outside to tell our friend Chelsea in our studio about the fire. "Chelsea, there's a fire. Wake up" She opened the door and saw the flames over the roof of our house. "OMG, is everyone ok? What can I do?" I love that her first response to the emergency was asking how she could help. She held Owen while I ran inside and got my wallet and our safe into the car.  We drove away and up the street to Grandma and Grandpa Mehlberg's house.

Brandon stayed at the house and was getting ready to wet the roof of the house when the fire trucks arrived at the burning house. They had the fire contained and under control really quickly.  Smoke filled the neighborhood and Brandon had to shut all the windows of the house. There were ashes everywhere, but luckily only a few things in our backyard had burn marks or melted from embers.

It turned out that the fire was a few houses away on the street behind us, about 200 feet from our backyard. Our understanding is that the homeowners were doing construction on a retaining wall in the front of their house, and unknowingly hit a gas line. The gas filled their garage overnight, and when they woke up early to take a shower, the pilot light on the water heater ignited the gas filled garage. In essence, the entire garage was one big bomb, blowing the garage door clear across the street into the neighbors house. The couple in the house tried to exit the front door, but were blocked by the flames, so they exited through the back of their house with their two dogs. One of dogs went missing, only to be found hours later running scared through the neighborhood. The fire was limited to the main house and the homes on both sides of it.  Very lucky! No one was hurt.

Camps Come to Visit

August 19, 2017

Cousin Hailey had a soccer tournement in San Clemente of all places. We were so happy to have them in town. Eric took everyone down to Trails with Maya dog, and Jesse caught some fun waves. At dinner time, Shane and Hailey brought Owen a special toy. They had played with their TinkerToys for long enough and were ready to hand them down to Owen. So cool! Hailey's team won the whole tournament the next day.

The TinkerToys are just as much fun for adults!

Sharing dinner is always a treat! Owen at the head of the table.

Grandpa's Carwash

Owen LOVES to help wash the cars! If you aren't paying attention, he will end up sitting in the bucket with all of his clothes before you know it!

Crystal Cove Camping

August 12, 2017

Getting a campsite at Crystal Cove in Laguna Beach is about the same as winning the lottery.  We had wanted to go camping for the weekend, but most of the campgrounds were full and we were thinking we might be out of luck.  We checked the state-wide campground website over and over, and someone must have cancelled a reservation at the exact moment we were online and I grabbed an awesome site for Friday through Sunday. Too perfect!

The campground burned a number of years ago and has since been restored with new facilities. The sites are on top of a bluff and everyone has a beautiful ocean view. There are miles of hiking trails to explore and Crystal Cove beach is right out front.

We had a relaxing weekend with Reef and Owen. We hiked the trails, swam in the warm water at the beach, and ate great camping food. Owen even had a bath with a beach view. We hope that we get lucky enough to score a site there again!

SurferCross

August 8-9, 2017

What could be more fun for Brandon than an event that combined both surfing and motos? Brandon was invited to participate in the 19th Annual SurferCross event this year with Blake, and they had so much fun.

There were two classes- professional and industry. In the professional class, one professional surfer is randomly paired with a professional motorcycle racer. Blake was paired with Cooper Abbott, professional racer and son of the famous Destry Abbott. In the industry class, all of the participant's names are put in a hat and drawn at random to decide the two man teams. Brandon was paired with a former professional jet ski rider named Tommy.

The event was scheduled over 2 days. The first day was a motocross race at Milestone MX Park in Riverside. Brandon said that many of the participants in the industry class worked in the motocross industry or previously raced, and not many were surfers. That made the racing really, really competitive. Neither Brandon nor his partner were fast compared to the moto industry guys, but they kept it safe and had a lot of fun. They ended up in 24th out of 27th after the day of racing two motos in the Riverside heat.  Blake and Cooper ended up in the middle of the pack in the professional division.

Day 2 was a surfing contest at Trail 6, San Onofre. Brandon knew that his team would have the upper hand in the surfing contest. The contest was set up in 3 team heats of 6 surfers. The industry division surfed just one heat, while the profession division surfed two.  The top 3 teams after the preliminary heats would surf the final.  For the industry division, that meant that they had just 15 minutes to score good waves in weak surf at Trail 6, and had to end up in the top 3 out of 27 teams to make the final.

As Brandon had hoped, many of the participants in the industry class were guys that worked in the motorcycle industry and were not surfers. Many of them did not have wetsuits or surfboards, and some had a hard time standing up on foam boards. Brandon and Tommy crushed the first round and came in 2nd overall in the final. They missed first place by 1/10th of a point. Brandon came home with a trophy for the surfing class! That moved them up to 10th place out of 27 overall. Blake and Cooper did well, but not well enough to make the final. They ended the weekend in the middle of the professional class, 13th out of 21, and had plenty of fun.

Cousin Visit

July 28, 2017

Colleen's cousin Eddie came to visit after moving to New Zealand to work at Ned's Propper Chips business. With Eddie visiting Tutu, cousin Naomi came out from Colorado with her son Peter to see the family. What a treat!
